Sump

A depression in the pit to allow for the collection of water and the installation of a pump for water removal.

Sump Pump

A device placed at the base of a shaft or in an MTBM to collect and remove fluids incidental to the construction process and resulting from shaft leakage, and to prevent the excavation equipment from flooding.
