The Green Communities Committee (GCC) Announces Sixth GCC Approved Option 1 Project: the Trenchless Technology Project

The Green Communities Committee (GCC) is pleased to announce the availability of a sixth GCC approved Option 1 project to assist local governments in meeting their climate action goals – the Trenchless Technology Project.

Local Governments from across British Columbia have demonstrated strong leadership in signing on to the BC Climate Action Charter and committing to work toward reducing GHG emissions and taking actions to make their communities more complete, compact and energy efficient.

Since 2007, the joint Provincial – UBCM Green Communities Committee (GCC) has worked with local governments to assist them in achieving these goals, including developing a common approach for carbon neutrality.

In 2011, the GCC established the Carbon Neutral Framework for BC local governments that included 4 steps (measure, reduce, offset/balance and report) and two types of projects – Option 1 and Option 2 projects – that local governments can undertake to reduce GHG emissions within their communities as a way of balancing their corporate GHG emissions.  Option 1 projects are pre-defined projects approved by the GCC. Option 1 projects are pre-defined projects approved by the GCC. Option 2 projects are projects proposed and undertaken by the local government and validated and verified by third parties. The GCC has previously developed and approved five Option 1 GHG reduction projects – supported by five related project profiles.

This GCC communiqué announces the sixth GCC-approved Option 1 project: the Trenchless Technology Project. The Trenchless Technology Project profile provides guidance on estimating the emission reductions associated with using trenchless technologies, rather than conventional open-cut trenching, for capital projects to upgrade, repair, replace or construct water or wastewater utility pipes. An accompanying GCC Carbon Calculator enables local governments that undertake eligible capital projects that use trenchless technology to replace utility pipes (general maintenance projects are not eligible) to estimate the amount of emission reductions realized.

HammerHead® Trenchless Introduces New CIPP Hot-Water Curing System at WWETT 2019

Feb. 26, 2019– LAKE MILLS, Wisc.HammerHead Trenchless, a Charles Machine Works Company, introduced the HeatWave, an all-in-one, hot-water curing system, at the recent WWETT exposition in Indianapolis, February 21-23. The HeatWave is a field tested, user-friendly, fully integrated unit that provides for quick activation of the resin and shortened curing times.

The HeatWave system’s ability to move water at up to 11 gpm helps it raise temperatures faster and keep an entire run up to 12 inches in diameter evenly heated to the target temperature. Moving more water through the boiler improves system efficiency resulting in shorter curing times and even cures throughout the length of the run.

All controls are centrally located for the operator’s ease of use. To switch from fill to recirculation mode, the operator simply turns a lever on the panel. An onboard return-temperature sensor makes it easy to monitor temperature, helping operators confidently follow the curing schedule for a given product combination on a specific job.

The HeatWave is the industry’s only hot-water CIPP curing unit designed, constructed and tested to United States and Canada safety standards, including applicable portions of UL 1776 & CAN/ CSA 22.2 no. 68.

37th Annual International No-Dig – Florence 2019 – Call for Abstracts Closes March 15

The International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) and the Italian Association for Trenchless Technology (IATT) are currently accepting abstracts submitted electronically for the 37th International NO-DIG Florence 2019.

The Deadline for abstract submission is March 15, 2019. Finals papers are due on July 15, 2019. Each participant can present up to 2 abstracts.

The Scientific Committee of the 37th International NO-DIG Florence 2019, proposes the following Paper Topics:

  1. Trenchless Technology Case Studies
  2. Environmental and Sustainability Benefits of Trenchless
  3. Research and Development
  4. Mapping and Inspection of Underground Utilities
  5. Infrastructure Financing for Utility Projects
  6. Horizontal Directional Drilling
  7. Microtunneling/Pipe Jacking/Auger Boring
  8. Trenchless Pipe Replacement
  9. Pipe Lining and Coatings
  10. Contracts

Authors are encouraged to select a topic of their interest.

For each topic please described:

  • A new application and/or
  • environmental and soil conditions and/or
  • up to date equipment and/or
  • material used and/or
  • performance of the No-Dig Technique applied.

Aspects such as Financing and Contracts are of interest as well, especially if connected to the use of Trenchless Technology.

The focus of each paper should be the innovation that can keep increasing the application of Trenchless Technologies.

Together with an Exhibition, containing the state-of-the-art technologies, the Conference Programme will be an empowering way for a wider knowledge of NO-DIG construction.

The No-Dig Down Under Team is seeking abstract submissions for The No-Dig Down Under Conference and Exhibition to be held in Melbourne, Victoria on 10-13 September 2019.

NASTT Student Member Alumnus, Urso Campos, Joins GeoEngineers Inc.

Urso Campos is an engineer-in-training who joined GeoEngineers, Inc. in late 2018. He has extensive education in engineering materials, infrastructure systems, and mechanics, and he has authored several technical papers already in his career. Urso has been a member of NASTT as a student and now as an engineer at GeoEngineers.

Prior to joining GeoEngineers, Urso was an engineering instructor and research/laboratory assistant at Louisiana Tech University, and he has served as geotechnical engineering adjunct faculty at Grambling State University in Louisiana as well as worked in a geotechnical and construction materials laboratory in Indianapolis.

During his time at Louisiana Tech University, Urso was privileged to be part of the Trenchless Technology Center, of which GeoEngineers is an industrial advisory board member, where he engaged in multiple trenchless technology research and development projects.

Urso’s work in the Pipelines Business Unit at GeoEngineers is focused on horizontal directional drilling (HDD) design engineering and construction consulting services. In the office, he works on trenchless design reports and in the field, his responsibilities include construction observation and on-site field documentation, serving as a liaison for clients, and reviewing and distributing daily field reports and project deliverables for client communication.

HammerHead® Trenchless Announces New Products at 2019 WWETT Show

February 12, 2019 – Lake Mills, Wisc.HammerHead Trenchless, a Charles Machine Works Company, announced today their new product intros for the 2019 WWETT show in Indianapolis February 21-23. Visitors to their booth #5206 will be able to see their all-new QuickLok inversion drums along with new cam-locking nozzle adaptors.

The QuickLok’s design offers cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) installers the most user-friendly and best performing inversion drum in the industry. With two drum sizes capable of holding up to 125 feet & 225 feet of 4” liner respectively, the QuickLok features a patent-pending, single-lever lockdown that gives operators a positive seal and secure latch every time.

“The single-lever lockdown feature comes directly from user input after more than a year of in-the-field testing,” said Matt Gabrielse, product manager of HammerHead Trenchless CIPP lines. “Time is everything once you’ve mixed the resin. If operators need access to the drum again for an adjustment on the fly, the QuickLok permits them to do it quickly, saving valuable minutes.”

Other user-inspired features include extra viewing ports and a detachable spindle wheel that makes it easier to navigate tight areas. Once in place, the wheel may be reattached to either side of the drum, accommodating workspace limitations or the preference of the operator.

Along with the new drums, HammerHead is also launching new cam-locking nozzle adaptors. Compatible with nozzles from other manufacturers, the adaptors enable CIPP operators to cover all 18 straight, 45- and 90-degree nozzle configurations to invert liners 2 to 8 inches in diameter with just two adaptors, using six nozzles they may already have.

“These new cam-locking adaptors can greatly reduce the number of attachments CIPP operators need to have on hand,” Gabrielse noted. “They’re another great example of HammerHead listening to the needs of our customers and responding with solutions.”
