Join us for an educational luncheon on rehabilitating the Kenilworth Trunk Watermain.

The City of Hamilton’s Kenilworth Transmission Main is a 1,050 mm diameter carbon steel watermain constructed in 1959 and 1960. It is one of two feeder mains that supplies water to the Hamilton Mountain and is a critical link in the City’s watermain supply network. The alignment of this main includes a 250 m horizontal section and a 50 m vertical section along the Niagara Escarpment, both installed within a 2.7 m (9 ft) diameter concrete shaft/tunnel. Previous investigations noted significant deterioration consisting of rusting, corrosion, and pitting on the outside surface of the watermain. Nondestructive investigations of the watermain were completed in recent years including visual inspections, internal CCTV investigation and a Guided Wave Ultrasonic inspection, all of which identified deterioration and loss of wall thickness in some locations including joint integrity, and internal lining competence. In order to keep the infrastructure in reliable condition, the need for rehabilitation was identified. A trenchless renewal option assessment determined a viable cost-effective method to rehabilitate vs replace the existing watermain, this led to the design and tendering, then construction phases of the project. The presentation focuses on the complexity of the deterioration and how the preferred rehabilitation option, involving Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer was selected. It will discuss project constraints, operational limitations, structural requirements, other project(s) priorities which resulted in emergency repairs delaying the rehabilitation completion and how all this was successfully overcome.

Presenter: Erez Allouche, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Stantec Dr. Erez Allouche has devoted much of the past three decades to research and practice in the field of underground infrastructure. His work focuses on the development of new condition assessment technologies and the design and analysis models for underground construction using trenchless methods. He specializes in the design of complex Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and microtunneling crossings, and to date, has completed the design and/or construction oversight of more than 160 such crossings around the world. These installations have included crossing of major highways, railways and rivers. His design experience also covers crossings utilizing other trenchless methods such as Direct Pipe™, pipe jacking, auger boring, pipe ramming, down-the-hole hammer and horizontal direct bores. Prior to joining Stantec, Erez was a Professor of Civil Engineering at Louisiana Tech University and the Director of the Trenchless Technology Center. He is the inventor/co-inventor of 17 patents in the area of trenchless technologies, and the author/co-author of more than 260 publications in the areas of buried infrastructure management and pipeline installation using trenchless techniques. Erez is a former member of NASTT’s Board of Directors.
